If you’re suddenly overcome with chills in 90 degree Florida weather, you’ve either got a summer fever creeping up or you’re watching Karl Denson blaze up Slightly Stoopid’s horn section at the St. Augustine Amphitheater! Luckily I was only experiencing the latter during last Thursday night’s stop on Stoopid’s “Return of the Red Eye Tour.”
In support of their most recent studio album, Meanwhile… Back at the Lab, Slightly Stoopid have made their way across the country sharing their signature hybrid strain of reggae, rock, punk, hip hop, and especially noteworthy on this evening – funk! You may have seen Stoopid 100 times, as many Stoopidheads have, but you’ve never witnessed their set list fully come alive until Karl D comes out ripping that sax! It adds a whole new dimension of classy soul.
Also joining the tour on this select date were South Bay, L.A.’s Fortunate Youth and Grammy-nominated D.C. area reggae specialists SOJA. Fortunate Youth’s feel good, rootsy vibe set the tone for the eager concert goers entering the Amphitheater early, readying the audience for a supercharged performance by SOJA. This was my first time seeing SOJA live and I was not disappointed. Neither were our front row friends:
Special thanks to Mason Jar Media for having us out to the show. I can’t think of a better way to wrap up our list of favorite summer events. This one scores pretty high, no pun intended.
