Hulaween Preview: Beats Antique, Kung Fu, Future Rock, Heavy Pets, and More Talk “The Afterlife”

Suwannee Hulaween, hosted by The String Cheese Incident over Halloween weekend, is a few days away and this year’s exciting festival is themed around “The Afterlife.” We asked a few of the featured acts to share with us their wishes for the afterlife, and how their Hulaween set will be different from any other.

David of Beats Antique:
Every Beats Antique show is completely unique. The creatures will be released from their cages! In the afterlife, [we would return as] a rainbow. Because double rainbows are awesome.

Jeff Lloyd of The Heavy Pets:
I’d like to be surrounded by friends and family at a music festival, with a lineup very similar to Hulaween, at a place very similar to Suwannee. But we’d all have wings. I definitely want wings.

Hulaween happens to be our 1000th performance. We are going to probably invite some friends to help us celebrate that milestone. There will be more champagne than usual.

The Heavy Pets play Sat, 3:15pm @ Main Stage

Adam Perry of Ghost Owl:
I’d like to be a musician again. I’d want to start over knowing what I know now.

Ghost Owl plays Sunday, 1:00pm @ Main Stage

Todd Stoops from Kung Fu:
We would want to be great winged birds whose feathers resonate the different musical pitches of our universe. Fitting with the overall theme of the event, we have prepared an afterlife themed show picked out for our special set at Hulaween – any other details might ruin the surprise.

Kung Fu plays Sat (Sun), 12:15a at Spirit Lake Stage

Felix of Future Rock:
Without a doubt, I would want to be manifested in the afterlife as part of the spiritual embodiment of music itself. I have always been awestruck by the power of music to spiritually bond people, cultures, lives, and experiences. The greatest reward in the next physical realm would be to fuse with that energy.

Halloween brings out the freaks! But, we’re not scared. There’s so much energy from the Halloween vibe, that’s impossible for the night not to feel special. Nonetheless, I think it would be safe to say we may have a couple tricks up our sleeve for Hulaween this year.

Future Rock plays Sunday, 8:30pm @ Ampitheater Stage

Michael Berg from Van Ghost:
If/when I transcend into the next life I would assume becoming love in it’s purest form would be the natural step forward based on the historical path I’ve taken on as a human thus far in my life. That way I could be part of many lives, and living creatures on a plethora of positive levels. Now… how I’m going to make that a costume for this year’s “After Life” theme is a whole other question!

The Ghost Unit has been going through some changes over the past year or so. What will make this set different from others in the past is the line up featuring some new and old members. On guitar we will have Nick Cassarino of the Nth Power and OG Ghost Unit shredder Grant Tye, plus myself on acoustic. On horns and joining me on vocals as always will be the Angel Pipe Choir of Jennifer Hartswick and Natalie Cressman. The really special additions for this years set will be OG bassist of the North Mississippi Allstars Chris Chew and on drums will be the one and only John Staten (Karl Densons Tiny Universe/Pimps of Joytime). In addition to this exact group one other Ghost Unit member who cannot be there with us this time around (Nashville’s Chris Gelbuda) we will be making a record together in December up in Vermont and this is the first official warm up show to those recording sessions. To distinguish ourselves from other acts at Hula, this is a rock and roll band that weaves in and out of rock, funk, Americana and alternative soul genres from song to song. We call it rock and roll commando and we hope you can join us for a special late night set at Spirit Lake on the final night right before Joe Russo’s Almost Dead closes things out for everyone.

Van Ghost plays Sunday, 9:30pm @ Spirit Lake Stage
