The Nth Power’s NYE Love Train was a hell of a way to ring in 2018. The talent was jam-packed into downtown Jacksonville’s 1904 Music Hall. Inside the cozy 100+ year brick walls Big Bucks Crew and Parker Urban & Friends warmed up the space for Nth Power’s soulful double set.
But before we go any further, can we pause to recognize the incredible amount of talent that shared 1904’s stage this NYE? Nth Power’s drummer, Nikki Glapsie, toured the world with Beyoncé for five years before moving on to join the New Orleans funk legend Dumpstaphunk. Bassist Nate Edgar of Groovechild and John Brown’s Body pairs perfectly with lead Nick Cassarino of Jennifer Hartswick Band and a touring member of Big Daddy Kane. Guest horns Chris Bullock and Justin Stanton, saxophonist and trumpeter, of Grammy award-winning Snarky Puppy; and last but not least Natalie Cressman, trombonist of Trey Anastasia Band. Woah!
The talent extended into the freshly renovated beer garden featuring both electronic and instrumental fusions of Vlad the Inhaler as well as his newlywed wife Booty Boo, Ohio-based Recess, and Bedside producing live instrumental house. Despite the cold and rainy night a generous crowd gathered outside, seemingly unfazed and grooving to the curated sounds.
Inside, Nth Power took us to church with a first set full of soulful originals. Frontman Nick Cassarino dubbed the theme of the night ‘The Power of Love’ and one thing is certain that man just gets it! Since Bear Creek and beyond, Nick gets on stage and sings a message of the healing power of music without fail. The Nth power’s trio is a collective body on a clear mission to spread “Joy”, “Truth”, and “Only Love” and the first set was a tribute to that ode. The first set closed with what we all wanted “More & More.”
Set number two was dedicated to the music of Earth, Wind & Fire. The ensemble got the party started again with “September” into “Sun Goddess” which left plenty of room for horn solos. Balloons from the midnight drop had dispersed and sprinkled the stage and dance floor with red and white confetti. A long jam of “Jupiter”, “Mighty Mighty”, and “Shinning Star” closed the evening in an upbeat elevated mood.
Big thanks to Trey Hebron of Passion Project and Jason Hunnicutt of 1904 for putting together a spectacular night of music.
As we enter 2018 on a clean slate let us remember: ‘We’re all on a mission to love like a rolling river, in time, our joy overcomes.’ – “Joy”, Nth Power
