Resembling more of an aquatic fairytale than a music festival, Imagine brought to life a sea of mythical creatures on the grounds of Atlanta’s 4th Ward Music Park. Mermaid ballets, glow gardens, candy-colored costumes – IMF was a feast for the eyes. Entering the park felt like opening the cover of a choose-your-own-adventure novel, each pathway leading to a different fantasy. All the characters beautiful, all the settings perfectly placed.

The Underwater World stage unveiled an intense lineup beginning with DJ MK Ultra on Saturday, followed by heavy sets of Buku, Phutureprimitive, Araabmuzik and Purity Ring’s Megan James.

Meanwhile at Amazonia stage, a smaller area offering a shady retreat, the hardcore sounds of Rekoil and Mantis opened the afternoon, preceding Document One and Dieselboy.

A winding trail along the majestic lake led to Imaginarium, an intimate amphitheater showcasing acts like Triz, Pyrite, Mick Swagger and more.

This was act one, cut short by a flash summer thunderstorm. What could have been a disaster, turned into a joyous romping of rain dancers and storm buddies huddled tight in vendor tents and under awnings, connecting with souls who may have otherwise remained unnoticed over the weekend.

Staff quickly regrouped the equipment and soon sound was restored with a roaring applause. Minnesota, Shwayze, Caspa, and Ethan Kath of Crystal Castles provided the evening entertainment before the night closed with Seven Lions, Beats Antique, Emancipator Ensemble and Fedde Le Grand.

While Saturday’s story was indeed memorable, Sunday was an exhilarating, non-stop magic carpet ride worthy of festival history books. Aladdin and genie wishes come to mind. Beginning with Ill Gates, Protohype, Neon Indian and Paper Diamond, to name a few, the energy was full capacity throughout the entire day.

The Pretty Lights block with Supervision and Michal Menert was a two-hour long dance fest, followed by RJD2’s hip hop infused collection of sunset tunes.

This was the rising of a roller coaster – a soothing ascension to the peak with an underlying anticipation of the drop, which came with the accelerating sounds of Adventure Club and Infected Mushroom.

Destroid’s kickass robot theatrics and Shpongle’s triptastic choreography were hightened by visuals lighting up the sky for more than an hour. The best finale a mind can imagine. Until next year.
